LIST PICK
GIUNGLA COLD
It’s not everyday that we get to feature an artist who’s cut their teeth on the Italian underground scene, so please pay special attention to Giungla. Picked up by homegrown independent label Factory Flaws last year and now signed to London's Some Kinda Love, Ema Drei continues to give growing space to her harsh textures, grunge vocal approaches and bold lyrics with ‘Cold’, a track which builds on the milder indie-rock flavour of her debut Camo EP. Her latest song is a tight formation of buzzing synths, simple-yet-punchy use of a drum machine, plus unnerving vocal samples that constantly mutter in the background. Speaking on ‘Cold’, Giungla tells us that "I like to think of it as a simple pop song but flipped upside down so that the textures fill it with tenseness and anxiousness. I guess it’s pretty cynical lyrically, and I wanted to keep the music to have that feeling charged, yet simple and full." Look out for Giungla at SXSW this year. - HT
